Q&A with Fitness Trainer Alex Esmail
Alex Esmail is a fitness trainer, entrepreneur, nutrition enthusiast and lifelong athlete. With a background in competitive swimming and rugby, Alex quickly developed a passion for fitness training and nutrition after moving from France to the United States for college. He considered the world of fitness his new “sport,” realizing the value of self-discipline and endurance when pursuing one’s personal health goals.
As his passion and commitment to fitness grew, Alex received more and more requests to train others at local gyms. Similarly, after graduating and entering the corporate world, he saw a desperate need for health guidance in the workplace. With 5 years of experience and an entrepreneurial spirit, Alex launched his online training company, Go Forth Fitness, to help busy professionals take ownership of their health through personalized exercise and nutrition programs.

What inspired you to pursue a life in health and fitness?
I love the idea of ownership. You and only you have complete control over your health and fitness (in most cases), which then teaches you a discipline that applies to all areas of life.
What three things would you recommend people change about their lifestyle to maximize their health?
- The people you surround yourself with
- The fuel you put in your body
- The amount of activity you do
What are some of the most common mistakes beginners can make when starting their fitness journey?
Trying to do it all at once! Start with one task, then turn it into a habit, and then add another one into the mix!
What in one fitness-related myth you would like to bust?
More is better. Working with busy professionals, I see a lot of “Type A” go-getters. When getting a better understanding of their habits, sometimes the lack of rest is what is keeping them from making progress. Not the lack of activity.
What keeps you motivated in your fitness journey?
Leading by example. I need to be the change I want to see in others before I dare prescribe it!
Do you have any advice for someone who feels unsure how to begin improving their overall health and wellness?
This may sound biased because I’m a coach, but in all honesty: reach out and ask questions! It will save you a lot of time, money, and potential injuries if you choose to seek guidance in the early stages of your fitness journey.
Do you see a shift happening in the public perception of fitness?
Yes. I think that more and more, health conscious individuals are not seen as “outcasts” but more so as the majority. Which is amazing!
What lifestyles do you think a healthy snack subscription like SmartBox would benefit the most?
Anyone who as a more sedentary lifestyle and has unhealthy snacking habits. We’re not asking to eliminate snacks; we’re simply asking to substitute with something a bit more nutritious!
What is your favorite healthy snack?
I’m so boring… plain nuts are my favorite snack.
Which of the food nutrient contents listed on a nutrition facts label are most important to look at when choosing a healthy snack option?
Sugar. Which sometimes can be hidden in labels under different names.
I would also encourage higher protein, lower carbohydrates, and higher unsaturated fats such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
